We spotted quite an array of fungus at Fairburn at the weekend. I have to say this first one is the prettiest i've ever seen - if you can call them pretty!
Here are a some of the others we saw. The little one had quite a lot of fun trying to spot them before us.
Don't know if you wanted to know their common names ?
ReplyDeleteBut , from the top , Shaggy Inkcap / Lawyer's Wig , an old bracket fungi no ID , Many Zoned Polypore , Buttercap , Fairies' Bonnets , Birch Polypore , Shaggy Parasol x2 and finally Fly Agaric .
That's great thanks for that, I knew a couple of them but id's are not my strong point yet, this is a great help

I had to smile as I photographed the Shaggy Inkcap yesterday too :) What a variety you saw!
ReplyDeleteI loved the first part of your visit too, a lovely selection of birds. I confess I have never seen a Shoveler but live in hope :) Lovely photos too, I particularly liked the LTT, Chaffinch, Pheasant and Mute Swan.
It sounded like you all had a great visit and I thought the RSPB idea for your little one was very clever.
Thanks for the comments, the Shovelers are the oddest looking birds! There is certainly plenty of fungus around at the moment, the wet weather is helping with that! I love that the RSPB have got things to do for the kids now too.

Pam intresting topic. I have just started to cultivate some fungus in the garden (purely accidental), however not sure of the IDs so will forum them soon.

Dave, i've had some in the garden too! I've really got quite into hunting out the fungus - never thought i'd be doing that! I'm not very good with the id's though so it's good to get some help

Good spots Pam, its a great time of year for them. Ive just ordered a Roger Phillips fungi book to help with my identifications. Coincidentally I spotted my first Shaggy Inkcap fungi on a grassy verge on Grove Lane, Headingley on Saturday. Best wishes, Linda
ReplyDeleteHi Pam, maybe you or Linda can ID mine on the birdforum.... 3 species in the garden at the moment, pretty cool :)
ReplyDeleteHi Linda, you'll have to let me know if the book is any good, I was a bit overwhelmed with choices when I had a look!
ReplyDeleteDave i've seen the photos & replied on BF :-)
Hello Pam, got the book, its a cracker, although it is definitely a little overwhelming. Ive also got a little DK Pocket Nature book too which is a handy little book to take out. I understand the Collins fungi book is also good. By the way Amazon are selling the Roger Phillips book for £11.20 rather than the full £20 if that sways you. I decided that I'd end up buying it at some point so may as well get it whilst the fungi are flourishing. Linda
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda, looks like it will be a good purchase & yes the price helps :-) I do have a little Collins wildlife book with a few pages of fungi - but none of the ones I see!
